Cardinal L

The 50th window in the Charley Harper Cardinal series, it features the cardinal placed in the middle of an outline of Ohio.

Not only does it pay homage to one of the 50 great states of our country, it was a showcase of our abilities as stained glass artists.  It helped us get our first solo exhibit, "Translations in Glass". which took part in the Map Room of The Ohio Statehouse.

Taken from an article in a Roger Bacon High School's newsletter:

Back in April of 2022 I made a Charley Harper cardinal themed window, with the cardinal centered inside an outline of the state of Ohio. When it was finished, my mom saw it and told me to consider donating it somewhere. She mentioned the capitol building. I didn’t think too much of it.

A month went by, and I finally decided it may be worth a try. So, I reached out to The Ohio Statehouse and sent them a picture of the cardinal window, saying I would donate it to them if they had a nice place to hang it. I honestly didn’t expect a response.

Within several days, however, I received an email from the Historic Site Manager at the Statehouse. He said he wished they could accept the window, but there wasn’t anywhere to hang it properly. Instead, he offered me a temporary exhibit inside the Statehouse.

I went up to Columbus and had a meeting with him. It just so happens I was in the right place at the right time with the right thing, and he offered me the time slot at the beginning of the new year in the main showcases of the Map Room. The Map Room connects the capitol building and senate building, and as you can imagine, has all kinds of people walking through. I definitely went home that day knowing I had a lot to plan but feeling fortunate beyond words. Great idea, mom!

The windows hang in the showcases using custom made hanging racks we are temporarily installing. There are also four windows being backlit with lightboxes, and a display of tools and equipment used in the window making process.

This is giving me a chance to represent stained glass in front of a huge audience and display a wide variety of styles. I’ve decided to feature some of my more bizarre, unique designs.

Thanks to the Ohio Statehouse and all the great people that helped make this happen, including Dayna Jalkanen and Chris Matheney. I’d love for anyone who can make it to Columbus to get up there and see it! Entry is free. Plus, you can check out all the cool parts of the historic capitol building while you’re there.
